Sad Anniversary

This year marks the 20th anniversary of AIDS. It's the sad anniversary that we don't want to celebrate. Twenty years later, millions people got infected and still no cure. According to UNAIDS estimates, there are now 33.2 million people living with HIV, including 2.5 million children. During 2007 some 2.5 million people became newly infected with the virus. Around half of all people who become infected with HIV do so before they are 25 and are killed by AIDS before they are 35. Around 95% of people with HIV/AIDS live in developing nations. But HIV today is a threat to men, women and children on all continents around the world. SOURCE

While You Were Sleeping

We sleep every night, roughly around 6-8 hours - which is about 1/3 of a day. But how much do we know about "sleeping" ?

Sleep is prompted by natural cycles of activity in the brain and consists of two basic states: rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, which consists of Stages 1 through 4. During sleep, the body cycles between non-REM and REM sleep. Typically, people begin the sleep cycle with a period of non-REM sleep followed by a very short period of REM sleep. Dreams generally occur in the REM stage of sleep. During the deep stages of NREM sleep, the body repairs and regenerates tissues, builds bone and muscle, and appears to strengthen the immune system. As you get older, you sleep more lightly and get less deep sleep.

Usually, REM sleep occurs 90 minutes after sleep onset. The first period of REM typically lasts 10 minutes, with each recurring REM stage lengthening, and the final one may last up to an hour. In people without sleep disorders, heart rate and respiration speed up and become erratic during REM sleep. During this stage the eyes move rapidly in different directions.
Intense dreaming occurs during REM sleep as a result of heightened brain activity, but paralysis occurs simultaneously in the major voluntary muscle groups.

The percentage of REM sleep is highest during infancy and early childhood. During adolescence and young adulthood, the percentage of REM sleep declines. Infants can spend up to 50% of their sleep in the REM stage of sleep, whereas adults spend only about 20% in REM.

Before or After

There have been many arguments about whether we should do cardio exercise before or after weight training. The other day my friend told me I could lose muscle mass if I do cardio after weight training. It made me wonder, so I Googled it (thanks god for this !) and found many articles which recommend to do cardio "after" weight training. "The study clearly shows that doing a weight workout before aerobics leads to hormonal changes that increased fat oxidation (read weight loss or fat burning) during the following aerobic workout." Also, if you are at the stage of bulking up do the cardio after the workout. If you want to tone down, you can do your cardiovascular exercise as a warm up before you lift weight. More article here.

Be Careful What You Eat

Now researchers are finding that many oral cancers in men are also associated with HPV virus (Human papillomavirus is well known to lead to cervical cancer in women.) Of an estimated 28,900 cases of oral cancer a year, 18,550 are in men. For those of you who are innocent - HPV can enter the mouth during oral sex.

Lean Body

Nowaday, in every fashion or fitness magazine, you'll see lean & tone models with "six pack abs" rather than big bulky guys. There is one thing you need to know, male fitness models have to workout harder than bodybuilders. Why? Lifting weights and bulking up is much easier than burning body fat and getting lean. To get big, you just lift with a high volume of lifts and progressively increase the weight over time. You don't have to be on a strict diet and you don't have to hit cardio hard. To get lean, you have to lift to maintain your muscle mass, you have to watch what you eat, and you have to hit cardio like a maniac. The reason you see very few guys in the gym with "six pack abs" is that getting lean is tough work.

If you want to lean down you just need to do a few things:

1. Perform Intense Cardio At Least 4-5 Times Per Week for 30-45 Minutes
2. Multiply Your Body Weight by 12. The Number You Get Will Be The Total Maximum Amount Of Calories You Are Allowed To Eat Each Day...Aim for Less If Possible
3. Quit Obsessing Over Strength

4. Quit Obsessing Over Protein Consumption

5. When In Doubt, Cut Back
on Lifting And Increase Cardio
6. You Will See "Six Pack Abs" When You Get Lean Enough. Don't Go Overboard With Crunches and Ab Movements. Cardio is Your Ticket To a Six Pack.

Another Reason to...

Masturbate...

Australian researchers questioned over 1,000 men who had developed prostate cancer and 1,250 who had not about their sexual habits. Men who ejaculated more than five times a week were a third less likely to develop prostate cancer later in life. The researchers suggest that ejaculating may prevent carcinogens accumulating in the prostate gland. The prostate provides a fluid into semen during ejaculation that activates sperm and prevents them sticking together. Dr. Graham Giles, of the Cancer Council Victoria in Melbourne, who led the research team said fewer ejaculations may mean the carcinogens build up. " It's a prostatic stagnation hypothesis. The more you flush the ducts out, the less there is to hang around and damage the cells that line them."

My Wish List...

"6-pack" is always on my number 1 wish list but I still don't have one. Here is another tips from Men Health to get one in 5-minutes. OK, I'll try to believe them...

Plank
Assume a press-up position, but place your forearms on the floor. Brace your abs as if you were about to be punched in the gut, and hold for 30 seconds.

Side plank
Lie on your left side, propping your body up on your left elbow and forearm. Raise your hips until your body forms a straight line from shoulders to ankles. Brace your abs for 30 seconds, then repeat on your right.

Swiss-ball crunch
Lie with your hips and lower and upper back resting on a Swiss ball. Put your fingers behind your ears and crunch your chest towards your hips. Lower to the start and knock out 15 reps.

Reverse crunch
Lie on your back, knees slightly bent. Raise your knees to your chest by lifting your hips up and in. Lower your legs and repeat for 15 reps.

Cable woodchopper
Turn your right side towards a cable station and grab the rope handle of a high pulley with both hands. Pull it down and across the front of your body until your hands are outside your left knee. Reverse the movement, do 15 reps, then turn the other way for another 15.

Reverse cable woodchopper
Now use a low pulley cable. Bend and grab the rope with both hands, arms almost straight and just outside your right knee. Pull the rope up and across your body until your hands are in line with your left ear. Reverse the movement and complete 15 reps on each side.

Another Reason to Sleep In

New study says early-risers are actually at a higher risk of developing heart problems. The study, conducted by researchers from several universities and hospitals in the western Japanese city of Kyoto, revealed a link between wake-up times and a person's cardiovascular condition. The study, covering 3,017 healthy adults aged between 23 through 90, found that early risers had a greater risk of heart conditions including hypertension and of having strokes.

Narcissism and NPD

Narcissism describes the character trait of self love. The word is derived from a Greek myth. Narcissus was a handsome Greek youth who rejected the desperate advances of the nymph Echo. As punishment, he was doomed to fall in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. Unable to consummate his love, Narcissus pined away and changed into the flower that bears his name, the narcissus. In psychology and psychiatry, excessive narcissism is recognized as a severe personality dysfunction or personality disorder, most characteristically Narcissistic Personality Disorder, also referred to as NPD. Narcissistic personality disorder is characterized by extreme focus on oneself, and is a maladaptive, rigid, and persistent condition that may cause significant distress and functional impairment. It's not You, It's the "Gene"

Researchers finally found a gene, called FTO, common in the population that dictates why some people gain weight while others do not. The presence of a version of FTO increased a person's risk for obesity, and it was very common in the people studie - 63 percent had one or two copies of it. People with two copies had about a 70 percent higher risk of being obese than people with none and were an average of nearly 7 pounds heavier than a similar person with no copies. Those with one copy had a lesser but still elevated risk. SOURCE

When More is not Enough

That sounds like me... At first I thought I have "DSACDAD" - Dysphoric Social Attention Consumption Deficit Anxiety Disorder. Then I found out that it's a hoax!!!
An Australian artist Justine Cooper created the fake website advertises medication "Havidol" for a newly recognised disorder. Ms. Cooper is mocking not only the drug industry for pathologising everyday life and creating drugs for imaginary disorders, but also the nagging feeling in a consumer-oriented society that "more is not enough". If they take her drug, patients will report renewed interest in themselves, an increased ability to spend, a return to former self esteem levels and a surge in well-being and drinking alcohol is not contra-indicated. Visit the website and take the quiz whether you have DSACDAD or not.
