A new San Francisco Federal building, which schedules to be finished by the end of this year, presents new challenges to natural ventilation design and energy efficiency. Most of the workspaces will have direct access to sunlight, substantially reducing the need for artificial illumination, and more than 70% of the structure will be cooled with natural ventilation. Right now, the Federal government buildings use 1.5% of the total energy in the United States.
